Even at a
young
age, I have always had a passion for music. However, I was
unable
to start playing guitar until I was about 19 years old. At
first,
being a public school jock, I followed the crowd in growing up with
rock & roll. I was especially drawn to the
oldies. At
age 20, Jesus called me to Himself, and I devoted my life to
Him.
This was the highlight, and true beginning, of my life. At this time, I
left rock & roll behind because of its worldly influences and
was
attracted to some bluegrass Christian bands that were putting out a
sound that seemed more in tune with my new-found convictions.
Not
only was the Christian message of these groups music attractive to me,
but the music itself seemed to go deep into my soul and took me to a
time and place when things were simpler and more pure. This
heavily shaped me in defining the flavor of music our family plays
now. At age 24, I was given the most wonderful gift my God
has
given me in this world: my wife Tami. She was only 17 when we
married (about two weeks before her 18th birthday). We both
had
aspirations to do something in music long before we met. Tami
was
taking fiddle lessons when we met, and her experience is what got our
kids started on their fiddles when they came along. I had not
had
lessons up to that point, but was able to sit in on her lessons from
time to time and picked up a thing or two from her teacher (who also
taught guitar). I was also eager to ask questions of any
guitar
player that came in my view. When Tami and I started out, I
don't
think we had intentions of having a large family, but we also didn't
have any intentions of having a small one either. It just
sort of
happened! (Yes, we know what causes it, that's why we keep
doing
it!) With every pregnancy came a blessing that was nearly as
wonderful to me as Tami. We found that every child that God
gave
us brought a desire to have another (once the labor pains were
forgotten). We instilled in them a desire for music when they
were just toddlers. Now, we are looking forward to finding
out
what instrument the younger ones are going to play and watching what
God does with the older ones in their careers. The Lord has
blessed us with a teacher that not only gives our second son, Collin,
lessons on his mandolin, but he also gives me guitar lessons.
I
have been able to take lessons for about a year now. This has
been a wonderful experience and I look forward to seeing what God will
do with our family music.
